Steve Acx’s 10-Year Trip of a Lifetime Took Him Skiing in Colorado (Again)

When your family loves skiing as much as the Acx family does, Colorado is always a logical vacation destination.

It’s where IT Manager Steve Acx chose to go for his five-year Trip of a Lifetime and where his wife wanted to celebrate her birthday a few years ago. And, when it was time to plan Steve’s 10-year Trip of a Lifetime, Colorado was once again the destination they picked.

Steve’s wife, Becca, has been skiing her whole life. Growing up, her grandparents lived in Colorado, and visiting them usually included a ski trip—usually to Keystone. As a result, Becca has great memories from the time spent there with her family.

Wanting to continue that tradition and create similar memories for their twin daughters (who have been skiing since they were four years old), Steve and Becca decided Keystone would be the perfect place to celebrate Steve’s 10-year Arthrex anniversary.

“Admittedly,” Steve said, “the area has changed a lot since Becca used to go there with her grandparents. There are a lot of new condos, and the Riverwalk area wasn’t there when she was a kid.”

The updates and additions to the area, though, have resulted in Keystone being deemed one of the most family-friendly resorts in the area, boasting (in addition to skiing, of course) a skating rink, a snow fort for kids to play in and a recreation center with an indoor pool, water slides, hot tubs and climbing walls.

Friends joined Steve and Becca in Keystone, two other families with whom they shared one large condo.

“Keystone had a phenomenal amount of snow this year,” Steve said. “The kids had a mountain of snow to play in right outside our sliding glass doors. They built their own fort and their own sledding runs, and we could keep an eye on them from the comfort of our condo.”

Steve and his family spent entire days skiing, usually on the mountain for the first run of the day and staying until the last run. They visited the rec center, snow tubed and went ice skating.

Not quite ready to go home at the end of the week, Steve and his family took a detour on their way to the airport to visit historic Georgetown. Known for its Victorian architecture and charming downtown area, the mountain village, now home to only 1,200 residents, was once the third-largest city in the state.

“It’s a beautiful little town,” Steve said. “I’m glad we took the opportunity to stop there and explore.”

Steve said he and Becca haven’t really started thinking about his 15-year trip, but that they frequently talk about going back to Italy. They honeymooned in Sicily, and would now like to visit the northern region of the country—which just so happens to be home to an array of ski resorts.

“These trips are always a highlight for my family,” Steve said. “We always look forward to our Arthrex Trip-of-a-Lifetime travels. Arthrex is an amazing company that looks after its employees, and my family greatly appreciates that. We are so grateful for this opportunity to create these memories every five years.”

For every five years of employment with Arthrex, employees are eligible for a company-paid Trip of a Lifetime to recognize their dedication. Look for more Trip of a Lifetime highlights on the Arthrex FacebookTwitterInstagram and LinkedIn pages.
