Arthrex Brings Production of Powered Instruments In-House

Arthrex recently debuted its new Synergy Power System – the first powered instruments designed, developed and manufactured in-house.

The Synergy Power System is comprised of two battery-powered handpiece tools – a dual trigger rotary drill and a dedicated sagittal saw – both of which (along with the majority of their attachments) will be manufactured at Arthrex Manufacturing Inc. South Carolina (AMISC).

“The metal handpieces are milled from aluminum blanks,” Engineering Project Manager Sam Dozier explained. “Then we assemble, test and package the product in-house.”

This project led to the hiring of new employees, including manufacturing engineers, additional machinists and a new group of assembly technicians.

Electrical Manufacturing Senior Engineer I Ron Wilson was among the new hires, bringing with him decades worth of experience in electronic engineering, batteries and medical devices such as implantable high-voltage capacitors.

In addition to bringing in new hires (and reallocating some existing employees), accommodations also had to be made to the manufacturing floor.

With the addition of four new milling machines, a new finishing area specifically dedicated to Synergy Power and three new assembly lines (one for the handpieces, one for the attachments and one for the batteries), this project currently occupies approximately 4,000 square feet of AMISC’s Building A.

Following beta testing, the full launch of the Synergy Power System is projected for early to mid-spring 2025.
