Arthrex hosted students and faculty from Lorenzo Walker Technical College’s (LWTC) Summer Program for presentations and tours demonstrating how IT plays an interdepartmental role in large companies.
Four high school students in the LWTC Summer Program who expressed interest in technology and three students enrolled in technological certificates at LWTC were selected to join instructors for a morning on the Arthrex campus.
The group heard from Corporate Engagement Supervisor Meg Hardt about the fundamentals of Arthrex and how they as students can get involved through various college experience programs and career showcases.
Director of Global IT Operations Bill Huber and IT Support Specialist Gloria Padilla Barajas explained the role of IT Operations. Gloria, having graduated from LWTC, shared her journey with the students, expressing the ways they can use an education at LWTC to advance in a large company like Arthrex.
As a member of the board at LWTC, Bill introduced the summer program instructors to Arthrex last month in hopes of exposing students to real world applications of IT.
“It’s all about training the next generation of talent to get out into the workforce,” he said. “The curriculum at Lorenzo Walker is very much aligned with what we see in the industry and prepares students to join the workforce.”
To gain hands-on experience, Clinical Trainer Ben Rouah and the Medical Education team led the students through an arthroscopic activity. The goal was to use minimally invasive nano technology to remove seeds from inside bell peppers.
The group then heard from Supervisor of Manufacturing Engineering Mike Moreland about the ever-growing use of 3D printing technology at Arthrex for product design.
The morning ended with a tour of Studio X by AV Technologies Director Mike Angeloff. Having started his career in IT, Mike was able to share his success story and show the students how vast their career opportunities are.
“This has given the students the ability to explore the world of technology,” said Bridget Parliament, instructor at LWTC. “There are so many sectors and fields that they were not aware of. I’m excited to see what they have learned through this process, not only about IT but also Arthrex and career possibilities.”
Visting the Arthrex campus was a fascinating experience for the students, and in just a few hours made a very successful first impression.
“Arthrex has a really beautiful and friendly campus,” said LWTC IT student Joseph Numa. “My favorite part about visiting Arthrex was how informative they were. It makes me want to come to the company myself.”
Joseph will be completing his certificates in April and hopes to pursue a career in cybersecurity.
“I think this visit was beneficial for all of us,” said Joseph. “We get exposure to career opportunities and Arthrex has the opportunity to meet students who are looking for jobs they offer.”
