Arthrex Wins National Award for Workplace Well-Being

Arthrex was recently named a platinum Wellness Alliance winner, a recognition for demonstrating top-tier commitment to protecting and enhancing the health and well-being of all employees.

Of the 2025 awardees, Arthrex was one of two platinum winners. In addition to the platinum designation, there were 10 gold, nine silver and one bronze winner spanning companies around the United States with 120,000 employees or less.

“This recognition highlights Arthrex’s dedication to supporting employee well-being and building a workplace culture rooted in the principles of the seven benchmarks,” said Director of Wellness Lisa Brown. “Achieving this designation is no small feat and a testament to the intentional effort, strategy and passion that leadership and the Wellness team bring to the workplace.”

The Wellness Alliance is an organization that unites the strengths of the two most recognized and influential professional associations in the wellness industry: Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) and the National Wellness Institute (NWI). With a long history of leading the charge in supporting wellness for individuals and workplaces, the Wellness Alliance offers trusted education and certification programs, evidence-informed resources and networking opportunities, so that professionals are empowered to positively impact well-being.

For the Wellness Alliance, a platinum ranking means well workplaces have met the highest standards of wellness support and organizational alignment. The workplace has distinguished itself as a leader and innovator in workplace health promotion and has demonstrated exemplary implementation of the Wellness Alliance’s seven benchmarks.

The seven benchmarks:

  • Committed and aligned leadership
  • Collaborate in support of wellness
  • Collecting meaningful data to evolve a wellness strategy
  • Crafting an operating plan
  • Choosing initiatives that support the whole employee
  • Cultivate supporting health promoting environments, policies and practices
  • Conduct evaluation, communicate, celebrate and iterate

Arthrex and its wellness programs are scored on a percentage for each of the seven benchmarks and the average is calculated to determine the organization’s rank. Anything over a 92% is a platinum score and Arthrex received at 96%.

To earn a Wellness Alliance ranking and score, companies must complete a questionnaire with approximately 150 questions, many of which are essay format requiring detailed explanations and photo evidence to assess the company’s efforts against the Wellness Alliance’s seven benchmarks. The application is comprehensive and included opportunities for Arthrex to share all initiatives that contribute to the company’s culture of well-being including the health insurance plan, company benefits, departmental opportunities like Learning and Development classes, Environmental Health and Safety, Communications, Human Resources and Meetings and Events programs, and feedback from people leaders and executive leadership.

“What makes well-being different at Arthrex is that it is not limited to a single program or department,” said Lisa. “Instead, it is part of the family-business culture of Making People Better and is supported on all organization levels.”

Caring for the well-being of employees has expanded throughout the years with a major milestone being the first on-site medical clinic in 2010. Several years after opening, Arthrex incentivized employees to complete important preventive care screenings including mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies and physicals by offering free, individual health insurance. Incentives have resulted in a 95% compliance with important, preventive care screenings creating a healthier and more engaged workforce.

Wellness expanded with the Wellness Center opening on the Naples global headquarters campus in 2019. Numerous fitness-based services were introduced such as group fitness classes, EGYM orientations, VO2Max testing, personal training and sport tournaments.

“Over the past five years, Arthrex has provided resources to develop a more holistic programming approach to support employees physical, mental, social and career well-being,” said Lisa. “Supporting employee well-being helps our employees continue to thrive while remaining laser focused on Arthrex’s mission. This award is a testament to the investment President and Founder Reinhold Schmieding has made in all of us.”

We know that when employees thrive, Arthrex thrives, and this award validates the important work of the Wellness team and all departments that contribute to creating the company’s thriving work environment.”

In 2022, the Wellness team expanded many programs to Arthrex’s campuses around the U.S. including adding a Wellness Specialist at Arthrex Manufacturing Inc. South Carolina (AMISC). Additionally, the team provides virtual lifestyle change and disease management programs, virtual fitness challenges, sports tournaments and sponsored athletic leagues, many of which are available to employees throughout the U.S.

Arthrex employees are committed to Making People Better around the world through innovative medical devices and Arthrex is committed to improving overall well-being.

“When employees are supported, they are more dedicated to the mission and there is a genuine happiness and loyalty,” said Lisa. “The real win for Arthrex is reinforcing our family culture and taking care of others.”
